Then, in the hills descendants of cavalry and ranch horses from the Great Basin and other rugged areas on Western Public lands.' I found out that the term Mustang literally means Wild Horse. A Mustang is not a separate breed. What a treat it was to be able to go to the different sanctuary areas and see the herds in as natural a habitat as one could get. Stallions ran with stallions. All horses were intact but treated with a method of birth control hormone to curb the population. We forgot how social horses are. They thrive together and like people have their own pecking order. What a thrill it was to watch them run with their manes flowing against the wind along the hills!
